He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Bloomsburg University in 2000. During his undergraduate studies he also earned minors in Latin American Studies and Environmental Planning. After college he served 18 months as an Americorps volunteer under the Student Conservation Association organization. After four years of employment, Stephen enrolled in graduate school at the University of Nevada, Reno. In 2007 he received his Master of Science Degree in Geography. His graduate thesis work focused on the cultural landscape of an emerging suburban development along the outskirts of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area.
